Parco dei Ravennati Reveals its History Through Current Excavation

Rome, June 19, 2013 – The colors of an extraordinary pavement in opus sectile and a 2,000 year old mausoleum are just part of the history currently emerging in the excavation project in Parco dei Ravennati, with 50 archaeology students from all over the world.

The areas excavated this season were initially investigated in September-December 2012, thanks to the Soprintendenza Speciale ai Beni Archeologici di Roma headquartered in Ostia Antica (dott. A. Pellegrino, co-director dott. Michele Raddi). In 2012 in area A, nearby the train station, there was the investigation of some visible structures, reused in the medieval period. One room, T1, in this area of investigation, has an interesting and extraordinarily well-preserved, mostly intact geometrically-arranged pavement in opus sectile (cut tiles of colored marble), dated to the fourth century AD. Such decoration suggests that this structure is a late antique house of importance. Area B, also in 2012, revealed a number of burials within the interior of a round mausoleum of the late Republican/early imperial period.

After these investigations, The American Institute for Roman Culture received a permit to excavate in the park. The 2013 excavation began on June 17 taking up work already started in Area B, with the scientific coordination of Dr. Paola Germoni, the administrator responsible for the site, together with the collaboration of Dr. Flora Panariti of the Soprintendenza Speciale per i Beni archaeologici di Roma. The prime objective was to bring to light the relationship between the late Republican mausoleum and the octagonal structure cut into its interior core, possibly made to house six tombs in its interior. In its current state, only tomb #1 yielded intact 2 human burials, an adult and a child (placed on top of the adult), whereas the other tombs were filled with much later material, mostly of the modern era. South of the mausoleum are a series of infant burials, of the type “in anfora” and “a cassone” (chest/trunk), that reuse walls of Roman date.

The Parco dei Ravennati is a valuable public space at the foot of the Castle of Julius II, an ideal park for residents as well as a tourist destination. The Special Superintendency for the Archeological Heritage of Rome and The American Institute for Roman Culture are working together to give back this green space to the local population. The space will soon be served by an area for refreshments, as provided for by the 10th Municipality in a project already agreed upon by the State Superintendency. These archaeological discoveries give new attractions to the Parco dei Ravennati, making its use concretely possible. The minimum requirements for this include benches, vegetation management, periodic cleaning, and a fence to permit nightly closure.

LO SCAVO

Lo scavo delle aree oggetto di indagine hanno avuto il primo inizio delle attività durante la campagna di scavo di settembre-dicembre 2012, grazie alla Soprintendenza ai BBCC di Roma con sede in Ostia Antica (dott. Angelo Pellegrino, co-direttore dott. Michele Raddi). L’area A, adiacente la via della Stazione ferroviaria, nell’anno 2012 ha messo in luce due ambienti contigui, che presentano una fase di riutilizzo di epoca medievale. L’ambiente T1, della medesima Area di scavo, ha restituito un interessante e straordinario pavimento in opus sectile databile intorno alla fine del IV secolo d.C. con un motivo geometrico. È quindi ipotizzabile che l’ambiente T1, con la pavimentazione in opus sectile, facesse parte di una domus tardo antica di una certa rilevanza. L’Area B nel 2012 ha restituito alcune sepolture ricavate all’interno di un mausoleo a pianta circolare di età tardo repubblicana-prima età imperiale.

Dopo questi indagini, American Institute for Roman Culture ha ottenuto una concessione di scavo per 3 anni nel parco. La campagna di scavo del 2013, iniziata il 17 giugno, ha avuto come obiettivo primario quello di mettere in evidenza la relazione che intercorre tra il mausoleo tardo repubblicano e la struttura ottagonale ricavata al suo interno. Tale struttura ottagonale sembra essere, allo stato attuale delle indagini, un edificio funzionale ad accogliere sei tombe al suo interno. Soltanto la tomba 1 ha restituito due inumati, di cui un adulto e un bambino sovrapposti, mentre le altre tombe sono state sicuramente oggetto di un rimaneggiamento di età probabilmente moderna. A Sud del monumento funerario sono state inoltre individuate alcune sepolture di infanti, del tipo in anfora e a cassone, che riutilizzano le strutture murarie di epoca romana.

Lo scopo futuro del sito
The American Institute for Roman Culture ritiene che sia opportuno non solo scavare per conoscere il passato e valorizzare i monumenti visibili (il mausoleo, il tratto di strada romana), ma che bisogna anche coinvolgere la comunità locale attraverso lo sito stesso del Parco dei Ravennati. Cosi’ facendo c’e’ un recupero del parco in se’, in modo che i residenti locali insieme ai turisti di Ostia Antica possino godere tutto cio’ che questo sito ha da offrire come area verde. Il parco e’ situato perfettamente a metà strada per attrare sia il visitatore che il residente locale, per apprezzare i monumenti lì che una volta costituivano parte di Ostia Antica, lungo la famosa ansa del fiume Tevere.
